Envision the American Civil War in Champaign County through self-guided tours of Goshen’s Maple Grove Cemetery in Mechanicsburg, Spring Grove Cemetery in St. Paris, Oakdale Cemetery in Urbana, and Woodstock Cemetery in Woodstock.
The silent histories held in the cemeteries come alive as you visit the eternal resting places of our ancestors and learn about their involvement in the Civil War, including two Congressional Medal of Honor recipients and a soldier who served under General William Tecumseh Sherman.
Our cemeteries are filled with beautiful examples of art and craftsmanship found in the varied monument styles and the materials used to construct them. There are three Civil War Memorials that commemorate the sacrifice of soldiers from Champaign County.
All these monuments stand as symbols to honor those from our past whose actions have contributed to the continued liberties and freedoms we enjoy in our country.
